Grup APRIL telah menerbitkan Laporan Keberlanjutan 2018, yang berisi kajian komprehensif atas kemajuan yang dicapai setahun terakhir ini terkait pelaksanaan komitmen perusahaan dalam hal keberlanjutan. Berikut adalah sambutan pembuka dalam Laporan Keberlanjutan tersebut, yang disampaikan oleh Praveen Singhavi, President Grup APRIL.

Tahun 2018 merupakan tahun dengan dinamika global yang begitu pesat. Meningkatnya permintaan konsumen di pasar utama kami terjadi seiring dengan naiknya kesadaran akan dampak perubahan iklim serta pentingnya melakukan tindakan bersama. Adanya ekspektasi bahwa pelaku usaha harus berperan penting dalam membantu masyarakat global mencapai 17 Tujuan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan (Sustainable Development Goals/SDG) dan sasaran iklim global menjadi bagian terdepan dalam kesadaran tersebut.

Dalam konteks ini, banyak perusahaan, termasuk APRIL, didorong untuk berupaya lebih, melampaui komitmen yang ada saat ini, dan bersiap untuk menjalankan usahanya dalam cara-cara yang memenuhi kaidah berkelanjutan sekaligus turut membangun masyarakat dalam jangka panjang, dengan didasari oleh pendekatan bentang alam yang holistik.

Kami menyambut baik tantangan tersebut, dan upaya yang kami lakukan dibangun berdasarkan landasan yang kuat sebagaimana terdapat dalam Kebijakan Pengelolaan Hutan Berkelanjutan (Sustainable Forest Management Policy/SFMP) 2.0, sembari kami memandang ke depan dalam upaya menempatkan diri kami agar senantiasa menjadi bagian dari solusi bagi masyarakat, iklim, pengguna, negara, dan perusahaan kami, yang mana hal ini sejalan dengan visi pendiri perusahaan kami terkait 5C (community, climate, customers, country, and company).

Meskipun implementasi SFMP 2.0 serta pengawasannya yang dilakukan secara independen tetap penting bagi kami, terdapat peluang transformatif untuk memperluas komitmen kami.

Satu langkah penting yang diambil ialah dengan terus menanamkan pendekatan pengelolaan hutan berkelanjutan dalam rantai pasok kami. Tim keberlanjutan kami telah bekerja lintas-fungsi dalam berbagai kegiatan operasional kami, termasuk para profesional di bidang keberlanjutan, pakar kehutanan, ilmuwan, dan peneliti.

Kami telah merampungkan tahap pertama proyek penting dengan PwC yangmencakup kajian mendalam atas dampak yang kami timbulkan di Provinsi Riau, yang dibandingkan dengan angka dasar di provinsi tersebut dan dengan menggunakan Tujuan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan (SDG) sebagai kerangka acuan. Nilai penting dari proses ini terletak pada identifikasi tujuan dan sasaran di mana kami memiliki potensi terbesar untuk membawa dampak sebagai katalisator, dengan berdasarkan pada kebutuhan yang telah dikaji di Provinsi Riau serta di tingkat masyarakat lokal yang berada pada lokasi operasi kami serta pada lokasi yang paling bernilai penting.

Tonggak capaian penting lainnya yang diraih pada tahun ini ialah perayaan lima tahun upaya restorasi ekosistem kami melalui Restorasi Ekosistem Riau (RER) – kami meyakini upaya ini merupakan salah satu contoh kolaborasi terbaik di Asia untuk melindungi dan merestorasi bentang lahan gambut yang bernilai penting. Pendekatan keseluruhan kami terhadap RER telah menciptakan model potensial yang dapat diikuti oleh pihak-pihak lainnya, seiring dengan bersiapnya Persatuan Bangsa Bangsa (PBB) menghadapi Dekade Restorasi. Fokus kami berada pada komunikasi dan berbagi ilmu serta pembelajaran.

Ilmu pengetahuan dan penelitian tetap menjadi landasan penting dalam upaya kami untuk memenuhi komitmen. Kami terus menanamkan sumber daya pada ilmu pengetahuan di tingkat internal serta melalui hubungan kerja kami dengan para penasihat independen di tahun ini, khususnya melalui Kelompok Kerja Pakar Gambut Independen (Independent Peat Expert Working Group/IPEWG).

Laporan Keberlanjutan kami tahun ini juga memberikan perhatian pada peningkatan efisiensi operasional APRIL yang menerus, khususnya penggunaan energi dan air di pabrik kami, serta semakin banyaknya pemanfaatan sumber bahan bakar terbarukan. Keinginan untuk terus melakukan peningkatan merupakan hal yang penting dalam upaya kami menjaga agar fasilitas produksi kami tetap menjadi salah satu yang paling efisien dan yang paling dapat memenuhi kebutuhannya secara mandiri di dunia.

Kami terus berkomitmen menjalankan Kebijakan Pengelolaan Hutan Berkelanjutan (SFMP 2.0) kami, dan akan terus meningkatkan verifikasi independen dan transparansi atas kemajuan yang kami peroleh. Kami juga menyadari adanya kebutuhan menanggapi mandat global yang makin penting demi tercapainya Tujuan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan di tahun 2030 dalam hal sasaran iklim yang telah ditetapkan berdasarkan sains.

Konteks tersebut itulah yang akan memberi arah pada pengembangan pendekatan yang kami ambil dalam hal keberlanjutan serta dalam upaya agar dapat lebih melampaui komitmen kami saat ini sejalan dengan nilai penting yang dianut di tingkat global. Kami menghadapi peluang ini dengan penuh semangat, dan kami sungguh ingin berkarya bersama para pemangku kepentingan guna melanjutkan pengembangan visi kita di bidang keberlanjutan.

Waste disposed is recorded through various means of measurement including estimation of weight by waste type. Particular waste types as described above are measured as a wet waste and converted to a bone dry (BD) weight. The wet waste weight is multiplied by the consistency of each waste type to determine the BD. The consistency is predetermined by the lab.

APRIL follows the international GHG protocol as developed by WRI/WBCSD to develop its emissions profile. The total emissions measured as emissions intensity is calculated based on tonnes of Scope 1 and 2 Mill Greenhouse Gas Emissions per tonne of product (paper, pulp and viscose). The emissions boundary scope covers gate-to-gate (wood processing in wood yard until pulp, paper and viscose production) of the three main GHGs: CO2, CH4, and N2O.

Method

To quantify the total GHG emission and removals across APRIL’s land bank from land use, APRIL follows the GHG Protocol Agricultural Guidance and IPCC Guidelines for Agricultural, Forestry, and Other Land Use. To detect the land cover change within the look-back period, i.e. 20 years APRIL utilized the remotely sensed data.

The GHG emission will be calculated as the total of carbon stock changes in woody biomass and soil organic carbon and include all major carbon fluxes such as peat decomposition, plantation growth and harvesting, and fires.

To quantify the amount of carbon unit to balance the emission, the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standards (CCB), or other internationally accepted standard will be used.
