Defining Our Business Strategy

The Executive Management Committee (EMC) sets the strategic direction for our business, which the Leadership Team (LT) is responsible for implementing company wide. Our APRIL2030 goals and other sustainability initiatives are a core part of the business strategy, ensuring that sustainability is integrated in our way of working. Every quarter, management reviews company progress, which is measured against a clear set of key performance indicators (KPIs). These KPIs are monitored by the APRIL2030 steering committee which evaluate the impact of our sustainability efforts on our operations and stakeholders.

Delivering Sustainability Impacts

Implementation of sustainability commitments and targets is managed by our Sustainability and External Affairs Department, which includes diverse teams spanning Strategic Initiatives, Ecosystem Restoration, Fibre and Mill Sustainability Operations, Stakeholder Engagement, External Affairs and Communications. To help us meet our APRIL2030 targets, these teams collaborate on all sustainability programmes and activities, which includes overseeing sustainability audits and certifications and engaging with stakeholders.

Our work is strengthened by the counsel of local and international experts.

We draw on the informed advice and expertise of independent external advisory groups: the Stakeholder Advisory Committee (SAC) and the Restorasi Ekosistem Riau (RER) Advisory Board. These independent groups include Indonesian and international experts who provide valuable input on implementing our sustainability commitments including our APRIL2030 targets, Group-level sustainability strategies, our peatland management approaches and ecosystem restoration programmes.

THE SAC

Ensuring Performance Transparency

The Stakeholder Advisory Committee (SAC) is a committee of independent forestry and civil-society experts. Since 2014, the group has monitored and publicly reported on our implementation of the Sustainable Forest Management Policy 2.0 (SFMP 2.0) based on independently verified information. In 2020, the SAC’s scope was expanded—it now also fills an additional role, offering guidance on the implementation of our APRIL2030 programme.

RER ADVISORY BOARD

Advising on Conservation Best Practice

External experts in the fields of conservation, community engagement, and landscape management form part of our Riau Ecosystem Restoration (RER) Advisory Board. Launched in 2013, this board guides RER’s management team on best practices that balance the interests of the landscape, the climate, and local communities.
