Terdapat kurang lebih 17.000 orang tinggal di area sekitar Restorasi Ekosistem Riau (RER), yang mana sebagian besar dari mereka menggantungkan mata pencahariannya dari lahan tersebut. Membuat masyarakat setempat untuk menjalani hidup yang lebih berkelanjutan serta keuntungan secara ekonomi merupakan hal yang sangat penting guna menyukseskan proyek restorasi dalam jangka panjang.

Dalam kurun waktu kurang dari dua tahun, petani cabai Riau, Zamri, secara konsisten telah memaksimalkan produksi dan hasil panen di lahan yang relatif kecil yang berdekatan dengan perkebunan kayu dan hutan alam, menjaga agar lahan bebas dari kebakaran dan bahkan menciptakan lapangan pekerjaan.

Hasil panen yang tidak pasti dari perkebunan jagung mendorong ayah berusia 41 tahun dengan dua anak ini beralih menanam cabai dengan menggunakan bibit yang disediakan oleh BIDARA, sebuah lembaga swadaya masyarakat yang bekerja untuk membangun kemandirian masyarakat pedesaan di Indonesia.

“Budidaya jagung sering gagal, jadi saya merasa  lebih baik beralih ke cabai karena hanya memerlukan lahan yang lebih kecil namun dengan hasil panen yang lebih besar,” kata Zamri, yang biasanya dipanggil Acok. Selain istri dan anaknya, ia juga juga bertanggung jawab untuk penghidupan ibu dan saudara perempuannya yang tinggal bersamanya.

Sejak mulai menanam dan membudidaya tanaman cabai pada Juli 2016 di lahan hanya seluas 0,3 hektar, hasil panen Acok telah meningkat, memungkinkan ia untuk menginvestasikan kembali pendapatannya untuk memperluas dan mengintensifkan operasi untuk menanam lebih banyak cabai, komoditas yang sangat terkenal bagi sebagian besar rumah tangga Indonesia.

“Kini, saya dapat memanen setiap tiga hingga empat bulan sekali dan mengumpulkan antara satu hingga tiga ton cabai setiap panennya untuk dijual di pasar dengan harga 30.000 rupiah (sekitar $2) per kilogram,” ujar Acok.

BIDARA merupakan salah satu mitra pelaksana Restorasi Ekosistem Riau (RER) dan bertugas untuk membantu masyarakat di sekitar lokasi restorasi eksistem untuk menerapkan pertanian yang berkelanjutan, meningkatkan kesejahteraan mereka melalui produksi pangan dan peningkatan pendapatan, sebagai upaya untuk mencegah perambahan dan degradasi hutan.

Diluncurkan oleh APRIL pada tahun 2013, program multi tahun  RER menerapkan sebuah pendekatan tingkat bentang alam terintegrasi untuk melindungi, menilai, merestorasi, dan mengelola sekitar 150.000 hektar lahan gambut yang terdegradasi sebagai sebuah hutan keanekaragaman hayati yang unik.

RER, bersama para pemangku kepentingan lainnya, membantu masyarakat dengan cara  memberikan sejumlah alternatif agar tidak melakukan praktik pertanian tebang bakar tradisional. Alternatif-alternatif ini mencakup keterampilan, sejumlah peralatan seperti traktor tangan, dan pendampingan secara konsisten sebagai upaya untuk mengurangi tekanan perambahan terhadap hutan alam.

“Dalam memberikan penjelasan untuk tidak membakar, pertama-tama kami harus menunjukkan alternatif daripada jagung, sekaligus memberikan petunjuk praktis, dan yang terpenting alternatif yang terjangkau untuk membuka lahan tanpa harus membakar lahan,” kata Syahroji, petugas masyarakat BIDARA yang bekerja dengan masyarakat Desa Pulau Muda, di Kecamatan Sanggar.

Kelompok masyarakat pada lokasi ini diidentifikasi oleh organisasi BIDARA sebagai salah satu kelompok petani kecil yang secara historis menggunakan api untuk membuka lahan pertanian.

Awalnya, Acok merasa ragu untuk beralih dari pembakaran ke area budidaya secara manual, karena ia percaya bahwa ia membutuhkan abu dari pembakaran lahan untuk menyuburkan tanaman jagungnya.

Selama musim kemarau, dengan menggunakan teknik bakar, hanya dibutuhkan satu hari untuk membersihkan lahan untuk penanaman kembali. Sebaliknya, budidaya manual membutuhkan waktu lebih dari tiga minggu dengan bantuan peralatan tangan untuk memotong semak belukar dan membersihkan gulma serta mengolah tanah, menghilangkan akar-akar besar dalam persiapan untuk menggunakan traktor tangan; dan akhirnya menjadi lahan siap tanam.

Sejak Acok mulai membudidayakan lahan pertamanya pada Juli 2016, pendapatannya telah meningkat, memungkinkan ia berinvestasi pada area teduh untuk bibit cabai.

“Mereka menjelaskan bagaimana api mencemari lingkungan dan, sejujurnya, saya juga takut kebakaran menghancurkan daerah sekitar, seperti yang terjadi di tempat lain. Dengan peralatan dan masukan dari BIDARA, saya merasa yakin bahwa saya dapat beralih ke tanaman lain tanpa kehilangan sumber penghasilan saya,” katanya.

Ibu Acok, Hasmahwati, 58 tahun, mengatakan: “Perubahan ini baik untuk kita. Dahulu kami hanya makan ikan dan nasi saja, tapi sekarang kami bisa makan ayam beberapa kali dalam seminggu”.

Saat ini, perkebunan cabai Acok terbentang hingga tiga hektar serta menjadi sumber pendapatan bagi tetangganya. Ia kini mempekerjakan empat orang yang bekerja selama tiga hari dalam seminggu untuk membantunya menyiapkan bibit, masing-masing mendapatkan penghasilan 50.000 rupiah untuk menyiapkan 10 baki untuk 150 bibit.

“Saya senang bahwa saya dapat berbagi dengan orang lain dengan menciptakan lapangan pekerjaan.”

Method

To quantify the total GHG emission and removals across APRIL’s land bank from land use, APRIL follows the GHG Protocol Agricultural Guidance and IPCC Guidelines for Agricultural, Forestry, and Other Land Use. To detect the land cover change within the look-back period, i.e. 20 years APRIL utilized the remotely sensed data.

The GHG emission will be calculated as the total of carbon stock changes in woody biomass and soil organic carbon and include all major carbon fluxes such as peat decomposition, plantation growth and harvesting, and fires.

To quantify the amount of carbon unit to balance the emission, the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standards (CCB), or other internationally accepted standard will be used.
