Lima tahun yang lalu, Restorasi Ekosistem Riau (RER) didirikan oleh APRIL untuk melindungi dan merestorasi kawasan penting untuk hutan gambut di Provinsi Riau, Sumatra, Indonesia. Semenjak itu, RER telah memulai program untuk melindungi, menilai, merestorasi, dan mengelola sekitar 150.000 hektar hutan lahan gambut di Semenanjung Kampar dan Pulau Padang.

Pencapaian RER selama ini adalah nol kebakaran, nol pelanggaran, nol penebangan illegal, dan juga telah mengidentifikasi serta mengukur berbagai biodiversitas, termasuk spesies langka yang terancam punah.  Pencapaian ini mendapatkan pengakuan pada pertemuan tahunan Dewan Bisnis Dunia untuk Pembangunan Berkelanjutan (WBCSD) yang diadakan di Singapura.

Bey berbicara pada WBCSD

Berbicara pada acara yang diselenggarakan oleh APRIL dalam rangka ulang tahun kelima RER serta dihadiri oleh lebih dari 200 delegasi WBCSD, Ketua Grup APRIL dan anggota Dewan Penasihat RER, Bey Soo Khiang, menjelaskan alasan utama perusahaan mendukung program:  “Kami mendukung program ini karena sejalan dengan filosofi bisnis kami, bahwa apa pun yang kami lakukan harus baik untuk masyarakat, negara, iklim, dan pelanggan kami, dan oleh karena itu lah akan baik bagi perusahaan.”

RER berkontribusi terhadap komitmen APRIL untuk melestarikan satu hektar hutan untuk setiap hektar perkebunan yang dimana dapat dilakukan berdasarkan izin eco-restorasi selama 60 tahun yang diberikan oleh Kementerian Lingkungan Hidup dan Kehutanan Indonesia. Hal ini juga menyelaraskan komitmen perlindungan dan konservasi lanskap APRIL terhadap Tujuan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan PBB (SDGs).

Dalam sambutannya, Bey juga memberikan penghargaan atas kontribusi pekerjaan yang dilakukan oleh mitra APRIL yaitu Fauna & Flora International, BIDARA, dan Laskar Alam. “Tim RER telah berusaha keras untuk memastikan bahwa kegiatan masyarakat tradisional dilindungi serta kegiatan sosial dan ekonomi tidak hanya didukung saja namun berkelanjutan. Mitra kami memiliki peran yang sangat penting dalam membangun hubungan kerja yang baik dengan masyarakat di daerah yang tentunya sangat penting untuk keberhasilan program jangka panjang.”

Bey menjadi salah satu pembicara pada RBF

Komitmen APRIL untuk menyelaraskan operasi bisnisnya dengan SDGs ditegaskan kembali di Forum Bisnis ini, yang diselenggarakan di Singapura. Berbicara pada acara pembukaan yang berjudul Membentuk Dunia Pada Tahun 2030: Kemitraan untuk Aksi SDG, Bey mencatat bahwa peluncuran SDG telah memberi perusahaan sarana untuk mengukur dampak operasinya dan memandu keputusan investasi masa depan yang sesuai.

Bey menambahkan: “Dengan peluncuran tujuan utama program di akhir tahun 2015 lalu, kami melihat peluang emas untuk menyelaraskan 5C kami dengan SDG. Keuntungan dari SDG adalah bahwa mereka membantu kami mengatasi dua masalah utama: apakah kami memenuhi kebutuhan masyarakat di tingkat lokal, dan bagaimana kami mengukur dan melaporkan dampak dari operasi kami. SDG telah memberi kami bahasa yang sama untuk mencapai ini.”

Bey mencatat bahwa pekerjaan yang dilakukan oleh perusahaan selaras dengan SDG sehingga memungkinkan untuk membandingkan prioritas SDG dengan yang ada di kabupaten di Provinsi Riau, yakni tempat dimana perusahaan beroperasi. “Ini akan memastikan bahwa kita semua bergerak ke arah yang sama. Pada akhirnya, SDGs adalah suatu konsep global, namun kami bekerja dengan pemangku kepentingan seperti UNDP memastikan bahwa adanya keterlibatan langsung di lapangan bersama masyarakat.”

Anthony Sebastian, Spesialis Perencanaan Konservasi

Anthony Sebastian, Spesialis Perencanaan Konservasi dan sesama anggota Dewan Penasihat RER, juga berbicara di Forum Bisnis Bertanggung Jawab ini. Dalam sebuah workshop tentang aksi dalam bidang iklim, Sebastian berbicara tentang pentingnya pengelolaan hutan dengan lanskap besar, dan secara khusus membahas tentang peran penting dari program RER dalam rangka restorasi lahan basah terdegradasi di Sumatra, khususnya di Semenanjung Kampar.

“Faktanya adalah, melakukan restorasi lahan basah adalah sama pentingnya dengan bagaimana melindungi lahan tersebut. Tetapi tidaklah mungkin untuk melakukan restorasi hutan dan lahan basah untuk kembali ke kondisi semula,” katanya. “Jadi restorasi itu sendiri, adalah penting untuk menetapkan tujuan yang jelas melibatkan pihak-pihak terkait memahami apa yang ingin dicapai secara bersama,” katanya.

“Restorasi adalah tentang membangun kembali fungsi ekosistem, di mana ini telah terdegradasi atau bahkan hilang.”

Pada kesempatan yang sama, Sebastian menunjuk kemajuan yang dibuat oleh program RER. “Kami sekarang memiliki pemahaman yang jauh lebih komprehensif tentang lahan basah di Semenanjung Kampar – apa yang hidup di dalamnya, bagaimana mereka berfungsi, dan apa hal-hal yang perlu diperbaiki. Kami tidak dapat merestorasi lanskap tanpa memahami sifatnya dan tanpa berfungsi dengan baik.”

“Semenanjung Kampar adalah lanskap besar, yang juga membuatnya menjadi layak untuk dilakukan restorasi. Anda memiliki lebih banyak peluang sukses ketika Anda beroperasi pada skala besar. Kami memerlukan bisnis usaha dengan sumber daya dan motivasi untuk menghadapi tantangan sekaligus membantu melindungi daerah-daerah yang kaya akan biodiversitas.”

Method

Waste disposed is recorded through various means of measurement including estimation of weight by waste type. Particular waste types as described above are measured as a wet waste and converted to a bone dry (BD) weight. The wet waste weight is multiplied by the consistency of each waste type to determine the BD. The consistency is predetermined by the lab.

APRIL follows the international GHG protocol as developed by WRI/WBCSD to develop its emissions profile. The total emissions measured as emissions intensity is calculated based on tonnes of Scope 1 and 2 Mill Greenhouse Gas Emissions per tonne of product (paper, pulp and viscose). The emissions boundary scope covers gate-to-gate (wood processing in wood yard until pulp, paper and viscose production) of the three main GHGs: CO2, CH4, and N2O.

Method

To quantify the total GHG emission and removals across APRIL’s land bank from land use, APRIL follows the GHG Protocol Agricultural Guidance and IPCC Guidelines for Agricultural, Forestry, and Other Land Use. To detect the land cover change within the look-back period, i.e. 20 years APRIL utilized the remotely sensed data.

The GHG emission will be calculated as the total of carbon stock changes in woody biomass and soil organic carbon and include all major carbon fluxes such as peat decomposition, plantation growth and harvesting, and fires.

To quantify the amount of carbon unit to balance the emission, the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standards (CCB), or other internationally accepted standard will be used.
