Tantangan tidak membebani Tony Sebastian. Tiga puluh tahun berkarya sebagai seorang ahli ekologi dan spesialis perencanaan konservasi yang dikenal dengan pemikiran terbuka dan praktis, Tony selalu tertarik dengan lingkungan.

Mulai dari membenahi kawasan habitat burung di bagian Selatan Caspia wilayah Iran, menulis panduan restorasi lahan basah untuk China, hingga perannya sekarang bersama tim ekologi APRIL dalam memperbaiki dan merawat Semenanjung Kampar sekaligus penasehat Gabungan Restorasi Ekosistem Riau (RER), Tony selalu berkomitmen untuk memberikan yang terbaik. ” Tujuan itu tercapai kalau ada keinginan yang kuat”, ujar Tony.

Sejalan dengan ambisi APRIL yang tengah sibuk mengerjakan proyek RER seluas 150.000 hektar, Tony berujar, “Restorasi lahan merupakan cita-cita yang ambisius dan tak murah. Pemerintah saja seringkali kewalahan. Banyak pihak yang harus terlibat. Restorasi ini hanya bisa berjalan dengan kerjasama yang baik”. Dirinya menambahkan, “UN Sustainable Goals sendiri menyadari perlunya sistem dimana perusahaan dan kelompok masyarakat bersama-sama melindungi mahluk hidup langka serta ekosistemnya. Itu adalah cara terbaik.”

“Belum ada yang sanggup melakukan hal ini. Biasanya hanya perusahaan besar yang mampu. Oleh karena itu, mereka butuh insentif. Komitmen APRIL sejalan dengan tujuan dan prinsip saya”

Kecintaan Tony terhadap lingkungan muncul saat ia dihadiahi teropong oleh ayahnya. “Ayah juga memberikan buku panduan, dan ketika berumur 12 tahun, saya sudah mengetahui ragam jenis burung yang ada di sekitar”, ujar Tony saat mengingat masa mudanya.

“Kami tinggal di kota Marudi, di sekitar Sungai Baram, tak jauh dari Gunung Mulu di Borneo. Hamparan hutan menjadi pemandangan sehari-hari. Rusa bermain di taman belakang rumah, ular bahkan pernah masuk ke kamar dan burung hantu kadang terbang di dapur. Benar-benar momen yang menyenangkan”, tambahnya.

Ketika masuk sekolah, Tony memilih untuk fokus mempelajari seluk beluk burung dan hutan dan memilih Elang Laut Dada Putih sebagai bahan disertasinya. Di sela-sela pendidikannya, Tony juga aktif di Malaysia Nature Society dan setelah 20 tahun berkecimpung, ia kini didapuk sebagai Presiden organisasi.

Didirikan tahun 1940, Malaysia Nature Society merupakan organisasi tertua di Malaysia yang fokus pada isu alam dan lingkungan. Sebagai Presiden, Tony giat mengadvokasi betapa pentingnya peran masyarakat dan pemerintah dalam menjaga lahan perhutanan. Kepemimpinannya yang handal membuat media menjulukinya sebagai salah satu aktivis paling vokal dalam menyuarakan upaya konservasi. ” Menjalani peran ini membuat saya sadar bahwa untuk mencapai hasil yang diinginkan tak cukup dari ilmu pengetahuan tetapi juga bagaimana memimpin dan menginspirasi orang-orang disekitar anda”, tegas Tony.

Selama menggeluti dunia konservasi lingkungan, Tony telah mengunjungi 17 negara di Asia. Prestasinya yang paling membanggakan adalah ketika dia bekerjasama dengan Badan PBB Urusan Lingkungan atau UNEP tahun 2000-2004 di Iran. Saat bertugas disana, Tony menikmati hutan dan pegunungan saljunya yang begitu indah, pantai, kawasan pertanian hingga perkebunannya. Namun dibalik keindahan tersebut, ada tugas besar yang harus diselesaikan: mengembalikan habitat Burung Jenjang Siberia. Para ahli ekologi berupaya agar nasib para burung tersebut tidak berakhir naas seperti Harimau Caspian yang punah pada tahun 2003.

“Kondisinya sangat memprihatinkan. Burung jenjang susah ditemukan. Tapi setidaknya kini masyarakat paham pentingnya menjaga habitat alam dan mahluk hidup”, kata Tony.

Di tahun 2007, Tony diundang Asian Development Bank atau ADB ke wilayah timur laut China. Tony diminta mengubah lahan pertanian menjadi lahan basah. Tony bergurau, “Karena proyek itu, saya lebih dikenal sebagai Ahli Lahan Basah.” Setelah proyek tersebut selesai, Tony merilis buku panduan Merawat Lahan Basah untuk China.

Kedua perjalanan tersebut membuat langkah Tony memperjuangkan isu lingkungan semakin dikenal dunia.

Ketika diajak untuk menjadi bagian dari APRIL, Tony langsung menyatakan kesanggupannya. Baginya, menjadi penasehat untuk Restorasi Ekosistem Riau merupakan kesempatan yang paling dinanti apalagi sudah sejak lama ia ingin berkontribusi bagi negara-negara di Asia Tenggara. Tony bergabung dengan APRIL di tahun 2016 sebagai penasehat teknis dan duduk di Dewan Penasihat.

Tony menyatakan, “RER merupakan upaya APRIL untuk mengelola lahan inti perhutanan dan menjaga keberlangsungan hutan Riau. Oleh karena itu, ketika diberikan kepercayaan oleh perusahaan sekelas APRIL, maka tanggung jawab anda bukan kepada perusahaan tetapi juga dunia.”

Sebagai penasehat teknis RER, Tony melihat betapa pentingnya sebuah perusahaan memiliki keahlian dalam menangani masalah lingkungan. ” Anda harus punya rasa memiliki terhadap proyek yang anda rancang. Anda harus membangun kekuatan untuk mencapai tujuan,” tegasnya.

Tony melihat banyak yang salah persepsi jika berbicara tentang restorasi lahan. ” Restorasi itu bukan berarti kita mengambil alih lahan melainkan upaya mengembalikan fungsi ekosistem lingkungan agar tidak rusak. Ini yang harus diperjelas”, kata Tony. Tony melihat, RER sudah melakukan beberapa perubahan signifikan.

“Memang cukup lama, tapi setidaknya sekarang kita sudah punya pemahaman yang sama tentang akan seperti apa lahan basah Kampar nantinya. Apa yang harus dijaga, bagaimana fungsi dan cara memperbaikinya. Ini merupakan hal paling penting. Karena kita tidak mungkin bisa merestorasi lahan tanpa tahu sifat alam dan fungsinya”, tambah Tony.

Puas dengan apa yang telah diraih sejauh ini, Tony berujar, “Kampar ini lahan yang luas. Kalau kita berhasil merestorasi maka manfaatnya pun akan besar. Potensi sukses selalu lebih tinggi jika kita merestorasi lahan yang besar”

“Kuncinya adalah fokus pada restorasi lahan. Kita butuh lebih banyak perusahaan dengan sumber daya dan motivasi tinggi untuk ikut terlibat dalam proyek ini, khususnya yang terkait dengan keberagaman biota tanpa harus kehilangan nilai komersialnya”, ungkap Tony mengakhiri percakapan.

Method

To quantify the total GHG emission and removals across APRIL’s land bank from land use, APRIL follows the GHG Protocol Agricultural Guidance and IPCC Guidelines for Agricultural, Forestry, and Other Land Use. To detect the land cover change within the look-back period, i.e. 20 years APRIL utilized the remotely sensed data.

The GHG emission will be calculated as the total of carbon stock changes in woody biomass and soil organic carbon and include all major carbon fluxes such as peat decomposition, plantation growth and harvesting, and fires.

To quantify the amount of carbon unit to balance the emission, the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standards (CCB), or other internationally accepted standard will be used.
