新たに確認された植物と動物の数のさらなる増加、地域の生物の多様性に関する調査の継続、保護しリハビリをおこなったスマトラ虎を自然へ帰す支援作業など、いくつかの重要な成果が、最新の「リアウ環境回復プログレスレポート(Restorasi Ekosistem Riau (RER) 2020 Progress Report)」に報告されています。

RERプログラムは、カンパール半島と近くのパダン島に位置する、スマトラ東海岸の生態系が脆弱な泥炭湿地林、これはロンドン市とほぼ同じ面積である150,693ヘクタールの土地ですが、この地域の保護に重点を置いています。同プログラムは2013年に設立され、民間主導による生態系保護のための活動としては、東南アジアで最大のプログラムのひとつです。

コロナウイルス感染拡大の影響にもかかわらず、2020年にも進展がありました。報告書の冒頭で「2020年は、近来において、人々とコミュニティが遭遇した最も困難な年であったと誰もが感じているでしょう。リアウ環境回復(RER)プログラムにとっても同様で、コロナウイルスの感染拡大による打撃は、私たちの決意と回復力を試すものでもありました」と、RER諮問委員会の議長であるベイ・スー・キアン(Bey Soo Khiang)が述べました。

また、「同年には、いくつかのプログラムや計画が中止になったり延期されたりしましたが、私たちの仲間が移動の制限やソーシャルディスタンスの確保など、困難な環境の下でも目的とやりがいを維持して、顕著な成果を獲得したことを誇りに思います」と加えて述べています。

26種以上の植物と動物を確認
2020年12月31日までに、RER地域内で見つかった動植物は総計で823種で、前年の年末時点の797種から増加しました。これには、76種の哺乳類、308種の鳥類、101種の爬虫両生類群、192種の植物を含みます。これらの多くは保護の必要があり、66種については国際自然保護連合(IUCN)のレッドリストに載っていますが、このうち39が危急種、17が絶滅危惧種、10が近絶滅種となっています。

一般のトンボや均翅亜目のトンボなどを含むトンボ類は57種が記録され、トンボ類の調査の対象であった4種のうち、最初の1種も見つかりました。このうち、9種はリアウ州で初めて、4種はスマトラ島で初めて、Amphicnemis bebarの1種がインドネシアでは初めて確認されました。

スマトラ虎を自然に帰す
RERチームはまた、Corinaと名付けたスマトラ虎を自然へ帰す、環境・林業省の取り組みにも参加しました。絶滅の危惧があるこの動物は、2020年初頭にカンパール半島の地方農園で罠にかかってるのを発見されました。人に接触する機会が比較的少ないことだけでなく、森林の自然環境や、えさとなる生物の存在、積極的な保護努力などについて調査・検討後、CorinaのリリースはRERの回復エリア内に決まりました。

エコリサーチ・キャンプ完成
計画と建設に4年をかけた後、「APRILエコリサーチ・キャンプ(エコ・キャンプ)」は2020年に完成しました。このエコ・キャンプはRERプログラムの活動拠点・現場事務所として、学生や研究者、企業の代表やステークホルダーがインドネシアの熱帯泥炭地の資源を責任を以て管理する機会をさらに増やすことのできる研究ハブとしての利用を目指しています。

生物多様性の調査と監視を継続
猛禽の移動の観測を含む、進行中の調査では、1日に8種440羽の鳥を調査した国際NGO国際湿地保全連合(Wetland International)による「アジアの水禽類生息数調査 (AWC)」に匹敵する、1日に8種、302羽の鳥を調査・記録しました。カンパール半島に生息するスマトラ虎の占有率調査は、2020年3月に終了しました。この調査は、「Sumatra Wide Tiger Survey (SWTS)」の一部を構成するものです。

そのほかにも生物多様性監視プロジェクト「Edge Effect Study」は、2021年も継続されます。同調査では、RERの泥炭地林と隣接するアカシア農園の間の縁または境界面全体の、哺乳類と鳥類の生息数について調べています。

Particular waste types as described above are measured as a wet waste and converted to a bone dry (BD) weight. The total emissions measured as emissions intensity is calculated based on tonnes of Scope 1 and 2 Mill Greenhouse Gas Emissions per tonne of product (paper, pulp and viscose). The emissions boundary scope covers gate-to-gate (wood processing in wood yard until pulp, paper and viscose production) of the three main GHGs: CO2, CH4, and N2O.

Method

To quantify the total GHG emission and removals across APRIL’s land bank from land use, APRIL follows the GHG Protocol Agricultural Guidance and IPCC Guidelines for Agricultural, Forestry, and Other Land Use. To detect the land cover change within the look-back period, i.e. 20 years APRIL utilized the remotely sensed data.

The GHG emission will be calculated as the total of carbon stock changes in woody biomass and soil organic carbon and include all major carbon fluxes such as peat decomposition, plantation growth and harvesting, and fires.

To quantify the amount of carbon unit to balance the emission, the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standards (CCB), or other internationally accepted standard will be used.
