Pulp-paper maker joins search for industry conservation standards<\/p>\n

JAKARTA, 26 JUNE, 2014 –\u00a0APRIL Group said today it has joined the effort to set industry standards for conserving carbon-rich forests. The pulp and paper manufacturer\u00a0added that it will adopt those standards in future forestry planning.<\/p>\n

“We have made it our policy to follow the industry\u2019s best practices pertaining to the\u00a0conservation of forests with large carbon stores,” said APRIL Group Sustainability\u00a0Director Petrus Gunarso. “We are ready to begin the work of defining what those\u00a0practices should be in collaboration with other stakeholders.”<\/p>\n

APRIL Group said it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Netherlandsbased\u00a0IDH, The Sustainable Trade Initiative, to help identify High Carbon Stock (HCS)\u00a0forests \u2013 areas with exceptionally large amounts of stored carbon. It\u2019s envisioned that\u00a0HCS forests will be protected from harvesting to prevent the release of greenhouse\u00a0gasses.<\/p>\n

Defining forest carbon standards is part of the initiative. APRIL Group will participate with\u00a0other industry players, NGOs and government representatives.<\/p>\n

Forests naturally store carbon, the quantity depending on the kind of vegetation. HCS\u00a0measurement standards are intended to steer development to low carbon stock areas to\u00a0increase land productivity and the absorption of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.\u00a0APRIL Group has stated that it will abide by those standards once they\u2019ve gained broad\u00a0industry acceptance.<\/p>\n

APRIL Group pledged to help identify HCS standards as part of a Sustainable Forest\u00a0Management Policy announced last January. The company operates forest plantations\u00a0on the Indonesian island of Sumatra to furnish wood for its pulp and paper mill.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
